St Aubin’s Bay, on the Island’s south coast, offers the opportunity to see many waders and Brent Geese within walking distance of the Island’s capital, St Helier.
From September through to April, Brent Geese of two races are present . As well as the Siberian dark bellied race, a small flock (up to 50 birds) of the Canadian light bellied race (hrota) may be seen. This is one of the few localities within the UK where these birds occur.
In spring, flocks of Great Crested Grebe and Red breasted Merganser are also regular and waders such as Sanderling, Ringed Plover, Dunlin and Oystercatcher winter. Little Egrets can always be found near the West Park bathing pool, as long as the tide is down.
